I've worked as a childcare facilitator at Tyler for four years. I'm also an Educational Aide at Tyler.

What is your favorite thing about working for Polite Piggy's?

My two favorite things about working with Polite Piggy's are the staff (because we are like family); and the students (because they keep me young and on my toes).

How do you practice self-care?

I practice self-care by getting plenty of sleep, amping up my water intake, and walking as often as I can (especially up and down the stairs at Tyler!).

What do you like to do in your free time?

Spend time with family, near and far.

What is your favorite food?

None in particular… I just love to eat..lol.

I was born and raised in DC, so without telling my age I’ll just say over 50+ years. :)

2 years! I'm currently a Childcare Facilitator for PK4 at Maury, but I've worked with all ages. I'm also a DCPS substitute teacher, working exclusively at Maury.

What is your favorite thing about working for Polite PIggy's?

Working alongside amazing people and being around great kiddos!

I've lived in the area all my life.

How do you practice self-care?

Art, books and walking!

What do you like to do in your free time?

Hanging out with loved ones eating good food, watching good/terrible movies to relax, reading, and one of my secret hobbies: playing video games!

Japanese cuisine at the moment!

I work in PK3 and I also teach 3rd grade Social Studies and Science at J.O. Wilson during the school day.

What is your favorite thing about working for Polite PIggy's?

I love working with the younger kids and seeing them get excited and participate in the programs. Pure joy!.

How long have you lived in the area?

I was raised in the DMV area since I was 2.

How do you practice self-care?

Rest when tired, cook, read, and spend time with family and friends.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Cook, read, and spend time with family and friends.

What is your favorite food?

Cheeseburgers!

How long have you been working for PP? What is your role?

I've been working with PP for about four years.

I work at SWS with all grades. My Polite Piggy experience began at Maury where my son was also a student.

I taught classes a few days a week in the morning where I got kids active and introduced them to nutrition as a certified BOKs instructor.

I enjoy empowering kids I work with by teaching them to become adults. You’ll often hear me reminding them they are already great at being kids. As it turns out, the idea of being a good adult is appealing to everyone. It’s been a great way to grab their attention.

For example, in my art classes we will always take time to observe the work of others to share ideas and broaden horizons.

For my own personal development I’ve taken acting and improv classes in recent years and I’ve found that this helps me share what I’ve learned with the kids.

Do you also work for DCPS/somewhere else? If so, for how long?

I believe work is more than just how we fund our personal lives. It’s how we participate in our community. I also work full-time at Edward Jones (an investment firm) and study Finance through the University of Arizona. I serve my community public notary in the District of Columbia.

Prior to working at PP, I served in the Coast Guard as a photographer and spokesperson. I was also a competitive climbing coach for youth teams, yoga teacher, personal trainer and certified CrossFit instructor.

What do you like to do?

I love living on Capitol Hill because I have access to all the things a city offers, but I also try to get out of town as much as I can, to camp and be outdoors. I aim to sleep outside at least 30 days a year. I find this slows down the “a little too busy” lifestyle I lead, and reminds me what is important.

How do you practice self-care?

I actually love to workout. I’ve always had a positive association with physical activity and I think it helps me to slow down the aging process.

What is your favorite part of working at PP?

It’s an enlightening experience to get to see small humans learn to navigate their environment. I witness social learning happen in real time. One of my favorite parts of engaging with children is challenging them with things they don’t think they can do. Kids love doing things on their own even though they will ask for help with everything.

Her favorite thing about PP Is that everybody gets along so well, and and kids enjoy being here. She loves seeing them happy, which makes her happy. She has always wanted to work with kids and absolutely loves her job. As most of our staff, she works a ton of hours and is at Maury from 7am until 6pm, every day.

And get this: Jacinta ALSO went to Maury from Kindergarten to 6th grade! She grew up at 14th and C and has lived in DC her whole life. (She had Ms. Duckett, our amazing founder, and a lot of other current Maury teachers.) After Maury, she went to Hine (which was located on PA Ave) and then went to Dunbar in their Engineering track. She really enjoys math.

Her favorite food (to eat and cook) is fried chicken.

When I asked her what she likes to do in her free time, she looked at me a bit sheepishly and confided that she actually has ANOTHER job working at Macy’s, so she barely has free time. When she does, though, she likes to hang out with her daughter, go to museums, or the trampoline park. Her daughter just turned 10 on the 7th, and goes to Center City. She enjoys spending time with extended family, as well.

Jacinta is clearly a people person, even if sometimes she seems shy. She gets along with everybody. She really enjoys dancing - when she was a student at Maury, she did Cheer and Drama Club with Ms. Battle.

Given her limited amount of time at home, she tries to relax when she gets some time to herself. She likes listening to music and getting her nails done.

Iris has been working at Polite Piggy’s since 2012. She started out at Tyler ES, and moved to Maury ES in 2013 (which is the same time she moved to DC, from MD).

She used to work in the mornings, but now she works after school with 1st graders.

When asked what she likes most about working for PP, Iris says that Polite Piggy’s is an incredibly caring and supportive place to work. After her mother passed, she said that somebody from PP checked on her every single day. She can’t say enough about the vibe around here, and I agree whole-heartedly.

Iris also works at Maury ES during the day, and actually volunteered at Maury before being officially hired. She has a son, Matthew, who started at Maury in 2015, as 1st grader. He’s now in 7th grade at Eliot-Hine.

Iris says she LOVES to cook. Pasta, especially Alfredo, and she can’t get enough of ribs, and strawberries.

She doesn’t have much free time, working so much, but when she does get a moment, she loves to shop. She tries to get plenty of rest, spends time with her family, and then casually mentions that she’s actually GETTING MARRIED SOON. Their ceremony was postponed because of the pandemic, so she is looking forward to married life.

She says she loves to travel and go on vacations. Stateside, she’s enjoyed trips to Florida and North Carolina. She’d also like to visit Hawaii. Dream vacation destinations include France, Italy, and Jamaica.

Iris is Self-Care Goals. As mentioned previously, she prioritizes rest, and, on top of that, she meditates multiple times throughout the day. Whatever she’s doing, it is working - she’s got that glow.
